Hormone
Research Underway
Scientists
will investigate chemical effects
As noted in May’s ARCC
News, a book entitled Our Stolen Future contends that trace amounts
of chemical residues in the environment are mimicking human hormones
and causing sterility, cancer, learning disorders, behavioral problems
and many other ills. The book’s authors state that they cannot prove
their allegations, and call for further research.
Despite their disclaimer,
unproven contentions are being sold as fact by those dedicated to
shutting down major industries which employ millions of people and
provide essential
products. The Society
of Environmental Journalists reviewed the book and noted, "Portrayed
trends are sketched from a remarkably small number of data points."
ARCC believes that most
Americans would prefer to keep industry and jobs alive while environmental
safeguards are improved on the basis of sound scientific research.
Government, industry
and academe are now funding or carrying out independent hormone
research. Research will focus primarily on certain powerful pesticides
and by-products of some types of industrial processes.
